About Our Award Winning Bakery!

Established in 1978, Piece of Cake Catering and Desserts is an award-winning bakery offering fabulous cakes, catering and desserts. But Piece of Cake is much more than cake. Our food designer and founder, Marilyn DeVault, has a flair for the unusual and the elegant. Whether it’s cakes, cookies, tortes, cheesecakes, or other treats, you will be delighted with our creations.
About the owner: Marilyn DeVault completed her masters degree in special education in the 1970′s at PSU and taught students with disabilities for several years before making a career change.
In 1978 Marilyn opened the award winning Piece of Cake Bakery. As the bakery grew, she focused her baking on meeting the special dietary needs of her patrons. Her Portland State training and teaching experience inspired her to address special dessert food needs. She has developed formulas that are gluten-free and vegan, and able to meet the needs of many children with autism on gluten-free diets.
At this point in her life, Marilyn would like to give back. She enlisted her prior PSU advisor and professor, Dr. Steve Brannan, to help create the Marilyn DeVault scholarship.
Piece of Cake continues to find innovative ways to donate. This year Piece of Cake was invited to compete on the Cooking Channel's Sugar Showdown. Marilyn and her head decorator Shelby Page flew to Toronto to compete with two other teams from around North America for a substantial prize. Piece of Cake won both rounds! Marilyn flew back to Oregon with a $10,000 check that went straight to her scholarship at PSU.
The highlight of her trip came when Johnny Iuzzini (pastry chef, cookbook author, & TV celebrity) tasted her signature chocolate cake on Sugar Showdown and said, "Mama, you got that right".
Recipients will be graduate students in special education interested in meeting the needs of children with autism, a population that has been increasing each year.
Piece of Cake Bakery is raising money to provide scholarships to graduate students at Portland State University preparing to become special education teachers.
Please help develop this student scholarship for special education teachers interested in helping children with Autism. Your donation would be targeted to support graduate students who are preparing to teach children with Autism and related special needs. The scholarship is a tax -deductible gift.
